2/05/12: Knock It Off! (315) - 2 Sun
315 – Knock It Off! Copying an Existing Garment
2:00pm - 5:00pm
Price: $95 for 6 hours (2 sessions)
We all have a beloved garment that we just can’t give up - and then the day comes when we realize that it’s just not wearable any longer. Here’s your chance to resurrect that beloved shirt or skirt! You’ll make a pattern from your garment without destroying it. This class is pattern making only, no sewing. Please, use a garment that is simply designed as our class space and time are limited. You can apply what you learn to your more complex garments at home.
Prerequisite: #310 Intro to Fitting & Patternmaking
Supply List:
Basic Sewing Kit
Muslin, unwashed, sufficient amount for your garment plus a bit
Mechanical pencil/erasers
Tailor’s chalk and/or pencils
Extra fine tip Sharpie Markers
All pattern making rulers: french curves/hip curves etc.
Gridded ruler
Pattern paper
2/08/12: Machine Intro (101) - Wednesday
101 - Machine Intro
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Price: $55 for 3 hours (1 session)
Our most basic class! This one’s for you if you just purchased a machine and you have no idea how to get it started, or if you’d like to become familiar with a machine before getting one of your own. Also good for general knowledge if it’s been awhile since you have used a machine! Following a brief discussion about sewing tools & supplies, you’ll learn how to prepare the machine for sewing: threading the top thread, winding a bobbin and installing it, and inserting a needle. Also, you’ll learn how to change stitches along with their length and width. Practice sewing some seams and finishing the edges, and voila! You have a cute mini-tote bag to carry your sewing supplies in. Learn on one of our machines or bring your own.* This class is technique only – to really get some experience follow it up with one of the project-based beginner classes like a throw pillow cover or pajama pants! You’re going to get a bunch of information in this class, so make sure you have a notebook and a pen/pencil.
Prerequisite: the willingness to absorb knowledge
Supply List:
Your class tuition includes fabric, thread and a bobbin for the classroom machine. If you have your own machine, make sure you bring a bobbin to fit! Or, if you have no idea what I’m talking about, just bring along everything that came with your machine and we’ll sort it out.
*Machines from the 1980’s and on work best for this class. If you have an older machine you’d like to learn on, call us or stop by before the class! Please make sure your own machine is cleaned and oiled and working properly! If it is new, you don’t have to worry about this. If you are unsure if your machine works properly or not, come to class a bit early so we can test it!
2/10/12: Not-Just-Denim Jacket (305) - 5 Fri.
305 - Not-Just-Denim Jacket
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Price $175 for 15 hours (5 sessions)
The Denim Jacket, perhaps the most enduring clothing icon, began as practical workwear over a century ago - today, it’s worn by everyone looking for that casual chic vibe. These days, you can find one in almost any form of denim - light washed to deep indigo and stylized in any number of ways; from short sleeves to super cropped, designer label to economy store brand and now...wait for it... you can make your own!
Use any bottom weight fabric you like: corduroy, Echino prints, cotton canvas or twill and of course, denim. This is a conventionally styled jacket featuring long sleeves with cuffs, front and back yokes with front pockets and flaps, three panel front and back, collar and bottom band. Technique focus will be Flat Felled seams, Double Topstitching, In Seam Pocket on Yoke, Collar, Flaps and Cuffs and Prong Snaps instead of buttons. We will address only minimal fitting challenges, like shortening/lengthening – if you need more fitting it should be done before the first class. Remember this is outerwear, so it’s not intended to be super fitted!
