235 – Quilt Making Basics

Whether your interest is in conventional or contemporary quilt stylings this is the place to learn the basics of quilt making from start to finish. We'll begin with rotary cutting and sewing an accurate 1/4" seam, then move on to piecing, layering, quilting and binding. Leave class with functional knowledge of the entire process of this enduring art form. Class makes one crib sized quilt! When you purchase your fabric and supplies from us, we’ll throw in the book of quilt patterns used in this class for free!

All fabrics, batting and supplies are available at Sew L.A., and we carry 1/4" feet and walking feet for all Janome machines!

Prerequisite: (any two of the following: #105 Throw Pillow Cover, #106 Swing Bag, #107 Cute Skirt) OR #110 Pajamarama OR #112 Tess' Dress

“Happy Hour – Relax and Enjoy” quilt pattern book by Atkinson Designs

All fabrics should be quilt-weight or calico weight cotton!

1 yard each of two different fabrics
1/2 yard for scrap cutting
1/2 yard fabric for the binding (can match one fabric or be a 3rd fabric)
1 yard fabric for backing of quilt (can match one fabric or be a 4th fabric)

cotton batting, crib size
Basic Sewing Kit including glass-head pins
1/4" presser foot for your machine (if available)
walking foot for your machine (optional)
cotton thread, two small spools or one large
8 1/2"x 24 or 24 1/2" acrylic ruler (Omnigrid/Omnigrip or Creative Grids are recommended)
45mm rotary cutter (Olfa recommended)
cutting mat, at least 18" x 24" but 24” x 36” is best (Olfa recommended)
Schmetz QUILTING needles: multipack with sizes 75 and 90
curved basting pins: one box of 300 or two boxes of 100
painter's tape, blue or lavender
water soluble pencils OR Chacopen by Clover
